How Picnic Tables at Saratoga Race Course Work

The backyard at Saratoga Race Course features hundreds of picnic tables, making it one of the most unique gathering spots in horse racing. Most tables are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis with a general admission ticket.

Claiming a table is simple, but timing is everything.

Guests hoping to reserve a free picnic table should arrive early and bring their own tablecloth. Once you've selected an available table, place and secure your tablecloth to mark your spot.

Gates open at 7:00 a.m. for early access to the backyard. After claiming your table, you'll be asked to leave the grounds before the official admission begins at 11:00 a.m., when tickets are scanned for entry.

On popular racing days—including major stakes weekends and Travers Day—many picnic tables are claimed within minutes of the gates opening. If having a table is important to your group, arriving well before 7:00 a.m. is the safest plan so you're at the front of the line.

An added bonus of arriving early is Breakfast at Saratoga, a longtime tradition featuring morning workouts, a trackside breakfast buffet, and backstretch tram tours.

In 2026, Breakfast at Saratoga runs from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on live racing days, excluding Travers Day and Labor Day. It takes place at The Porch of the Clubhouse at Saratoga Race Course. Buffet tickets are $30 for adults and $12 for children ages 12 and under.

  • Bring a tablecloth that's easy to spot. A bright color or simple pattern can help your group find the table quickly once the backyard gets busy.
  • Pack tape or table clips. A breezy morning can make it easier to keep your tablecloth secure while you wait for the gates to reopen.
  • Arrive earlier than you think on major race days. Travers Day, popular Saturdays, and marquee racing weekends can draw long lines before the 7:00 a.m. gate opening.
  • Review the cooler policy before race day. Make sure your ice is sealed in bags, avoid glass containers, and organize your cooler for a smoother trip through security.
  • Consider a reserved picnic area for larger groups. If you're celebrating a special occasion or visiting with family and friends, reserving a picnic space can eliminate the stress of finding a free table.
