Horse Racing 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Saratoga Race Course
Planning to attend the summer racing meet at historic Saratoga Race Course? We have you covered. Whether you are tracking down key festival dates or trying to figure out how early the gates open, this introductory guide breaks down everything a first-timer needs to know for the 2026 season.
The 2026 Racing Calendar
The 2026 season features a grand total of 51 racing days at Saratoga, divided into three distinct blocks. This is the final year of Saratoga's "extended" schedule before returning to its traditional 40-day summer meet in 2027.
1. Belmont Stakes Racing Festival
- Dates: Wednesday, June 3 – Sunday, June 7 (5 days)
- The Big Event: The 158th running of the Grade 1, $2 million Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 6.
- Note: Saratoga is hosting this historic race for the third and final time during the massive reconstruction of Belmont Park. The festival will return to its traditional downstate home in 2027.
- Community Perk: Look out for a free "Belmont on Broadway" concert to kick off the festival.
2. July 4th Racing Festival & Opening Weekend
- Dates: Friday, July 3 – Sunday, July 5
- The Big Event: This festival serves as the official, high-energy kick-off to the summer meet, accompanied by the regional "July 4th All American Celebration."
3. The 2026 Summer Meet
- Dates: Friday, July 3 – Labor Day, Monday, September 7 (46 days)
- Weekly Schedule: Live racing runs Thursday through Sunday from July 9 to July 26. Starting July 29, the track resumes its traditional five-day weeks (Wednesday through Sunday). The season wraps up with a special six-day "Closing Week" ending on Labor Day.
- Dark Days: There is no live racing on Mondays or Tuesdays (except for Opening Weekend and Labor Day Monday).
Marquee Race Days
If you want to experience Saratoga at its absolute peak, mark your calendar for the summer's two biggest crown jewels:
- The Whitney Stakes (Grade I, $1 million): Saturday, August 8, 2026
- The DraftKings Travers (Grade I, $1.25 million): Saturday, August 29, 2026
2026 Admissions, Gates & Post Times
Plan your arrival around post times (when the first race begins) and gate openings, which vary significantly depending on the race day:
- Standard Race Days (Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday): Gates open at 11:00 AM. The first post time is at 1:10 PM. General admission is $7 if purchased in advance or $10 at the gate.
- Standard Saturdays: Gates open at 11:00 AM. The first post time is moved up slightly to 12:35 PM. General admission is $7 if purchased in advance or $10 at the gate.
- Whitney Day (Saturday, August 8): Gates open early at 10:00 AM. The first post time is at 11:45 AM. General admission is $15 if purchased in advance or $20 at the gate.
- Travers Day (Saturday, August 29): Gates open earliest at 9:00 AM. The first post time is at 11:05 AM. General admission is $25 if purchased in advance or $30 at the gate.
Admission Perks: A general admission ticket grants you access to the iconic Rivers Casino Backyard, Clubhouse, Grandstand, and the trackside apron right next to the action.
A Trackside Staple: Breakfast at Saratoga
Nothing beats morning workouts at the Spa. You can watch the horses train against the beautiful backdrop of the historic grandstand while enjoying breakfast.
- When: Daily from 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM (Except Travers Day and Labor Day).
- How: Driven by CDTA, a buffet breakfast is available on-site. Reservations are not required.
Pro-Tips for First-Time Visitors
- Cooler Rules: If you bring a standard-sized cooler, all ice must be contained in sealed bags upon arrival. You must enter through the designated cooler inspection lanes at Gate B (Union & East Ave.) or Gate C (Nelson Ave.).
- Going Cashless: While credit and debit cards are accepted everywhere on-track, fans carrying cash can easily use the convenient reverse ATMs located around the venue to transfer cash onto a card.
- The Box Office: The Ticketmaster Box Office (Gate A on Union Ave.) opens daily starting June 29 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (closed on "dark days" once the season starts).
