yearling: A horse in her/his second calendar year of life, beginning January 1 of the year following its birth. (In the Northern Hemisphere: August 1 in the Southern Hemisphere.)

yielding: Condition of a turf course with a great deal of moisture. Horses sink into it noticeably.
